As a single mom without a working car or enough money for gas, I was struggling just to get my kids to school—let alone afford school supplies, food, or summer programs. ElkhartCares stepped in when we needed it most. They made sure my kids had what they needed to start school with confidence, helped one of them attend summer camp, and even supported my oldest in taking the next step toward college. I truly don’t know where we’d be without them.

Local Parent Supported by ElkhartCares

I noticed one of my students wearing the same clothes every day and being teased because of body odor. When I gently asked, the student shared that their family couldn’t afford a working washer and dryer. I reached out to ElkhartCares, and within days, they had brand-new units delivered to the family. That quiet act of kindness changed everything for that child.

Our class was preparing for a field trip, but one student was going to have to miss out due to financial struggles at home. I quietly reached out to ElkhartCares—and they immediately stepped in to cover the cost. That student got to be part of the experience with their classmates, and the smile on their face said it all.

Support for school-related costs such as classroom fees, sports and activity fees, yearbooks, and field trips

Behind every grant or grocery bag is a moment of relief for a student or family who knows they’re not alone.

When families face hardship, students often suffer in silence. We step in to ensure every child has what they need to learn, grow, and thrive.

We provide:

  • Emergency rent and utility assistance
  • Clothing, shoes, and winter outerwear
  • Hygiene products and laundry supplies
  • Fuel and transportation help
  • Back-to-school supplies and backpacks
  • Holiday meals and gifts

All support is confidential and coordinated with school staff and family liaisons.

Classroom & Teacher Grants

When teachers have the tools they need, students see what’s possible—and believe in what they can achieve.

Teachers know their students best. That’s why we fund direct classroom grants to empower educators and meet unique classroom needs.

Examples of funded grants:

  • Books and curriculum enhancements
  • Science lab materials
  • Positive behavior programs
  • Teacher appreciation meals during busy back-to-school nights and parent-teacher conferences
  • Field trip transportation
  • School supplies for underserved students
  • College credit course fees

Educators can apply year-round. Grant applications are reviewed promptly to allow fast support.

The classroom grant was a game-changer for the struggling students in my class. It gave me the tools to meet them where they were—and helped them feel seen, supported, and capable. The difference was immediate.

ElkhartCares helps make our Summer Library Program a success. Their support allowed us to offer amazing grand prizes for both kids and teens—powerful incentives that keep young readers excited and engaged. This year, we had 182 participants under the age of 18.

Literacy & Learning

A book, a backpack, or a summer reading challenge can spark confidence and curiosity that lasts a lifetime.

We believe literacy is foundational. We promote reading year-round—especially during school breaks when learning loss can occur.

Key initiatives

  • Summer Reading Program: Backpacks filled with books, activity kits, and prizes
  • Library Partnerships: Including the Reading Tree installation at the local library, and the annual Summer Reading Program
  • Book Giveaways: Each year, we distribute hundreds of books to children at Santa’s Village and other community events, helping spark a love of reading beyond the classroom

Summer Reading Partnership with the Library

ElkhartCares is proud to support the Elkhart Lake Public Library’s Summer Reading Program, which keeps students engaged and learning during the summer months.

Through our grant, the library is able to provide:

  • Backpacks filled with age-appropriate books, activities, and surprises selected by the librarian
  • Reading incentives to encourage students to meet their summer page goals
  • Zoo passes that families can check out from the library for free family fun

Teachers in the district collaborate with the librarian to identify students who would benefit most from extra literacy support and summer engagement. By tailoring the program to these students, we help prevent summer learning loss while making reading an enjoyable and rewarding part of summer.

With ElkhartCares’ support, the library’s Summer Reading Program continues to nurture young minds, foster imagination, and strengthen our community one book at a time.

We also extend our literacy support through book giveaways at Santa’s Village and other community events.

The Reading Tree — funded by ElkhartCares — invites children to discover the joy of books and imagination. This beloved addition to the Elkhart Lake Public Library will inspire young readers for generations to come.

Santa’s Village
A magical holiday experience with games, crafts, storytime, book giveaways, and surprise visits from Santa—free for all local families

My kids were so excited to meet Santa, but what meant the most to me was the bag of books we brought home. We don’t have many new books, and my kids kept rereading the same one over and over. Now they curl up with their new stories every night. Times are tough, and gifts were hard to come by this year — ElkhartCares gave me something special to put under the tree, and that meant the world to us."

As an older widow, the holidays can feel very lonely. This community gathering was so cheery and sweet — it truly brightened my season. It became the highlight of my holidays. The best part was that it didn’t cost me anything to attend, which means so much since I’m retired and funds are tight. Being surrounded by neighbors and joy reminded me that I’m not alone.

Veterans Day Luncheon

Each year, ElkhartCares proudly sponsors the Veterans Day Luncheon—a deeply meaningful event where students come together to serve, honor, and learn from our local veterans and their loved ones.
This special tradition is made possible through a dedicated grant from ElkhartCares, which allows students to:

  • Plan and prepare a heartfelt meal for veterans, from purchasing ingredients to serving each plate with care
  • Create handmade decorations that transform the space into a warm, welcoming celebration of gratitude
  • Present a commemorative pin to every veteran in attendance as a keepsake of appreciation
  • Perform live music through the school band, filling the room with energy, emotion, and pride
  • Listen to stories and wisdom from a local hero, creating a living connection between generations

It’s more than just a meal—it’s a living lesson in gratitude, history, and service. Students gain firsthand understanding of sacrifice, honor, and community, while veterans receive a joyful and well-deserved celebration of their contributions.

Supporting Student Resilience: Help Fund a School Social Worker

2025 Is Funded — Now Let’s Make It Permanent

We’ve taken the first step: a dedicated School Social Worker is serving students this year. Now, we must build the endowment to keep this life-changing support in place year after year.

We have significant work ahead to grow this fund so that the School Social Worker position can be sustained year after year.
Your support today moves us closer to making this life-changing resource a lasting part of our district.
We can’t do it without you.

Why This Matters:

Thanks to the generosity of our community, ElkhartCares has fully funded a School Social Worker for 2025.
This vital role — our Youth Resiliency Coordinator — is part of the proven Check & Connect program, designed to keep students from falling through the cracks.
Through weekly one-on-one mentoring, students build trust with a caring adult who helps them navigate challenges, stay engaged in school, and feel a true sense of belonging.

  • Weekly mentoring sessions for middle and high school students
  • Early intervention to prevent dropout and disengagement
  • Tools and strategies that empower students to succeed
  • A trained professional who partners with schools, families, and students
  • Evidence-based results backed by the U.S. Department of Education
  • 100% of participating students said: “My mentor empowered me to do my best.”
  • Sense of belonging increased by 12% among participating students
  • 24% more students reported receiving help during emotional lows

We work hard to intervene when we see struggles with mental health, chronic absences, and home issues — but we need more help for these children.
